I had the chance to take a trip down memory lane with seven wonderful young performers/alumni of U of Manitoba as part of their Homecoming Weekend celebration. We danced through hits from the 50’s – 80’s celebrating the achievements of both the university’s many successes and their ongoing supports of the arts including the newest Desautels Faculty of Music building. What a blast!!
So…20 years after the fact, I had the great pleasure of working in the Ceremonies Division of the Canada Games…and true to it’s name…it was the Hottest Summer in Half a Century. The heat was felt by all the performers, crew, technicians and backstage volunteers but everyone managed to pull of a spectacular show. There’s nothing like filling a football field with young and vibrant energy (performers and athletes) brilliant costuming (thx to PRP’s Brianne), colossal handheld props and supersize puppets (shoutout to Dan & his crew). The dancers were enthusiastic and well-taught by choreographer Jocelyn Peden, Kelsey Chase and our local team of dance captains- Maddie, Samantha, Brooke and more…Thanks to Patrick Roberge, Jen Jensen-Tracy, Heather, Megan and the entire PRP team for making it happen. See you in 2037!!
Winnipeg opened its arms to the rest of Canada on July 28th, 2017 with the Opening Ceremonies of the Canada Games ; I had the good fortune of working alongside PRP Productions in the role of Performer liaison which meant I helped secure and rehearse thousands of volunteer performers to dance and sing in the Canada 150-themed event. It was a complete blast! WST’s own StudioWorks Academy was featured as support vocalists in the “Tribute to Manitoba” segment featuring Bros Landreth and RWB dancers Yosuke Mino and Alanna Mcadie. The large production numbers choreographed by PRP choreographer, Jocelyn Peden wowed the crowd and allowed the talents of our local dance community to shine through. I was particularly proud of my All Abilities Dancers who danced in two segments: Electric Love (Serena Ryder) and Summer Heat (Coeur du Pirate). Hats off to the wonderful staff, crew and support team of PRP and Canada Games.
You did us proud!
It’s been a full summer so far kicked off by Winnipeg Studio Theatre’s great trip to NYC as part of their bi-annual Broadway Bound adventure. the 5-day event included four Broadway shows, two Broadway song & dance workshops, bus, boat and walking tours as well as the obligatory shopping sprees. Highlights included tickets to Dear Evan Hanson (2017 Tony Award winner for best musical), our Canadian-made hit show Come From Away (we had an exclusive post-show chat with creators Irene Sankoff and David Hein plus full cast), Broadway Workshops with Mamie Parris and Kristy Cates and an incredible night of Fireworks and Celebrations for the 4th of July. Lots of high energy and inspirational moments had by all!
